Figure 1. The overfunded PI with grants almost as old as I am!
Preface: This is an angry rant.
So I was looking up someone in our field who is a little older, okay they are fucking old. The guy has an RO1 going on year 27, and another younger model RO1 that just turned 26 years old. Each of these grants is in excess of $500k a year in direct total costs, plus the guy has a piece of an PO1 (don't worry this is relatively new). Seriously to have two grants that old, um has there never been a fucking priority shift? Ever? At some point wouldn't the NIH cutoff funding for the grant as this dude has probably drug this shit down the road for way too long. I've seen postdocs from his lab present and its on par with taking a kid who wears a helmet to a debate against William Jennings Bryan (old school reference, look it up, I'm not giving you the damn link). This guy has lost his innovation and does not want to go outside of the box based upon questions posed to him during presentations and comments from many leading PI's in the field. Hey why don't you look at this? No, I prefer to just focus on this. No wonder new researchers can't break into the field, when we have overfunded fucking driftwood sitting at the top. And believe me I am not anti-competition but come the fuck on, 27 years? TV shows end and so should grants!

I'm curious as to when his last renewal was. I've heard of many old-timers losing their long-time R01's in the past 2-3 years, or at least having to go through a lot of re-tooling to get funded. If he's up soon, this trend might not continue...

I know several folks with R01(s) for that long. Just because you have had the same grant forever doesn't mean that you are necessarily still doing the same shit. When I was writing my grant, some of the advice I got was to make the title vague as can be (think: mechanisms of physiology) so that it will apply to whatever you want to do. Because, apparently, reviews are always easier on a continuing grant than a new submission.

That's generally true (with one major exception). Assuming you've published etc., when you come up for renewal you do so with a track record in the grant topic (and hopefully lots of preliminary data).

The one exception is your first renewal. I've heard (anecdotal evidence alert!) that's harder than subsequent renewals. Mostly because when you get your first grant you're usually already behind the curve in terms of how much of what you proposed you already have done.* That means you likely come up for renewal with somewhat less preliminary data than others up for renewal at the same time. And your new investigator status is no more...

* This may change with the shorter NIH apps - less room means more of your preliminary data needs to be published. Not that helps new investigators.

I know of someone who has held R01 funding since 1978, the project is dynamic and definitely of clinical importance.

Mod, I 'm not saying there are not some great geezer scientists out there whipping ass and taking names of the younger noobs, but there are also driftwoods like the one I mentioned above. And as Odyssey said, its generally easier to renew than get a new RO1. Maybe there should be a max life on an RO1 and then there needs to be a new submission?

Actually, the first renewal of an NIH grant is EXTREMELY difficult. This is because there are breaks for new investigators in the percentage that get funded, but there are no breaks for competitive renewals.

I say that anyone that can have two R01s funded in this climate must be doing something right. I bet if you read the competitive renewals over the last 5 cycles you would be able to realize how far the project has progressed. At the very least, you should try to learn grant writing from this guy!

Gerty-Z I take grant writing tips from anyone, but from what I understand, his form of grant writing is he locks himself away to do it. He solicits no assistance from postdocs other than give me your data so I can make a figure. My boss however, drags me and my laptop in the office to produce figures for his RO1's, read the application, even help craft a paragraph or two.

Sorry I forgot to write this, some people are weird about handing over their grant applications. A lot of folks I know and going from memory even a badass like CPP will give up his funded grant apps and summary scores.

I definitely see and agree with your points Abel. I agree that a -over 20 years is probably someone who has earned it and I'm sure this guy did too but I think the quality of his science has shifted into the decline phase.

eye of the beholder, eye of the beholder.

one thing this discussion is missing is a cultural shift driven by a change in the expected ability to renew a reasonably productive project on a predictable timeline. it was just more expected that a single major program type grant would form the backbone of a lab's funding. Nowadays, with the expectation of revisions and much lower hit rates, the best strategy is to have overlapping timelines with different grants on approximately the same topic.

so you may not have impressive -27+ grant numbers but so what? the reality is still the same in that a lab has a coherent direction, scientifically, but funded under different grant award numbers.
