Mr. Clean brings the pain to those who don't clean and so do we!
happiness.
Our lab has a monthly ritual where we all take a break from practicing the dark arts for an hour or so to give the lab a good scrubbing down. I mean everything. We pull all of the glassware and chemicals out the cabinets to give them a good wipe down to remove any dust or spilled dirt. Centrifuges are cleaned and oiled. Rotors cleaned out. Benches wiped down. Hoods cleaned up and sanitized. We've got a bunch of nice new stuff, its gonna age but there is no reason that we shouldn't have nice old stuff too. Since we all pitch in together it maybe takes us an hour and a half each but represents over a full day of man hours worth of cleaning in a short concentrated time. And for all of us like many, we try to clean up behind ourselves but stuff falls through the cracks. This is our opportunity to to keep the place in tip top shape and the place is always clean to show off to visiting dignitaries. And for us, its a measure of pride, we do good science in a nice looking lab. What is your cleaning ritual? Oh and this is an interactive blog post so get off your collective asses and leave some comments. So scrub it down because we don't want no scrubs when it comes to cleaning.

I love lab clean-up days!! My grad lab used to do this every couple of months, and it was so nice seeing those nasty spots in the lab get scrubbed down (our weigh bench was always the worst). I miss this terribly in postdoc lab. My nesting instinct these days, combined with my normal love for cleanliness and organization, is causing me to clean up after everyone else around the lab. It's quite the fight to stop myself when I've got a lot of work to do!

Due to the use of our balances by outside labs it sometimes resembles a balance that would be more suitably found in an Chinese opium den with all the white powder and shit spilled around it. One buffoon can turn our nice balance into unpristine crackhouse squallor in a matter of seconds and then make for the hills leaving us to clean it up.

Oh, wrong post.

When I was lab-ratting it for the most part it was just me and the PI. I did 95% of the lab work and he...well, didn't. My ritual every Friday afternoon when energy starts to fail and i know I have to b back in lab at 10am on Saturday morning was to clean. Centrifuges, PCR machine, fume hoods, cell culture incubator, e-phys rig, spills on the floor, counters etc. Check the stocks and re-stock where necessary.

The rituals like that kept me sane for the last 12 months of hell.

That was totally bizarre.... I wanted to comment, but the actual text box for commenting completely disappeared. Unacceptable, Brian.

What I was TRYING to say was that I would give anything to a lab which valued clean-up type days. We moved into this lab space 4 (5?) years ago and all put a lot of elbow grease into cleaning up after the prior (disgusting) lab, but have never had a joint cleaning day since then. Since messiness irritates me the most by far, everyone just waits until it passes below my tolerance level and knows I'll take care of it. And since my bench is always the cleanest and most organized by a mile, everyone else uses it when they have too much crap on their own bench. ARRRRRGH.

Hey, I thought the blank comment was some kind of existential essay on cleanliness and was thus quite pithy.

I felt that it represented a higher order of cleanliness and mental clarity, it feels kind of cheap now to learn it was a goof up. And here I thought you touched my soul and core of my being with abstract thought provocation. I feel ashamed!

I hate lab cleaning. Well, I hate cleaning generally. But I hate making noise with the vacuum and wiping around dirt on the floor to look busy. I hate having to get out of the way or stand around awkwardly, or else having others do the same (we do not *all* clean on the same day, we have a rotating chore schedule with two people cleaning). I hate having to hurry so people can get their experiments done. I hate having to drag out 20 chairs (for 5 people) into the hallway. I hate our department head making lame jokes and looking at us all like we are crazy. I hate that my advisor makes lame gender oriented comments about it. I hate that my labmates take pictures of a dude with a mop "to show his wife, so she knows he actually can do it!"

And I ESPECIALLY hate doing all that, and STILL having filthy hoods and weighing areas, unless I clean up after everyone.
