In college (for a short period of time) I had a job at a local biotechnology company that focused on vaccine research. The job was great at the time, I had pretty flexible hours and the pay was great for a college kid ($15/hour in 2003). The job was really gopher work but I got to go in and work 10pm-1am a couple of nights a week. My main responsibility was to make solutions, gels, change buffers on overnight dialysises, change antibody incubations on westerns, and make media for cell culture. My boss, a midlevel bench scientist was really happy with my work and since I worked fast, I usually had time at the end of my shift to do homework or study. Our company arranged to attend some unknown technology and jobs fair in Tampa, FL at the time. My boss invited another technician and I to go along for the weekend conference and not wanting to pass up a free all expenses paid vacation, I went. Apparently our company did not do the proper research ahead of time. We were signed up to be an exhibitor at a telecom conference and job fair. To put it politely, we were way the fuck out of place there. Our boss called the higher ups to explain the situation and was told to just grin and bear it through the weekend. So that Thursday evening we attended a banquet with telecom execs, middle managers, and shit ton of representatives from ISPs. The next morning the boss said he couldn't take it anymore, he gave myself and the other tech, who we'll call Lump $250 each to man the booth for the rest of the weekend. We promptly agreed and the boss booked a flight and went home. Rather than sit around board for two and half more days, Lump and I devised a diabolical plan. To begin with, our goal was to be drunk the entire conference, which was achieved through mixing drinks in our corporate sponsored and logo embossed waterbottles which we would sneak out to the car and refill every so often and it gets so much worse. At this point in time Halo 2 had just recently launched for the Xbox gaming system and was wildly popular. Sadly Lump left his system at home and mine had just been recently stolen. So we conveniently borrowed the tv from our hotel room and went to Circuit City (which now makes me feel old and way outdated) and I purchased another console while Lump bought the game. Using the internet connection through my laptop I was able to hook up the to the Xbox live service and we played Halo 2 online with our buddies the entire weekend. So telecom folks trolling the floor for contacts, sales leads, and potential conference ass would pause at our booth to see two twenty-somethings, drinking and shouting into headsets playing video games. One lady got so mad and started yelling at us while I was trying to spit mad hot 20 year old game at a gorgeous girl who I would never have a fucking chance with. Lump, being a gentleman, friend, drinking buddy, and at this point in time, wingman, kindly informed her that we paid the exhibitor fee and could do whatever the fuck we wanted to do. Alas the pretty girl laughed at us and walked off to some other section of the conference hall leaving me to drowned my sorrows in more liquor. Lump somehow actually struck up a date that night, while I got so drunk that I passed out and slept in our booth. Thank goodness when Sunday morning finally rolled around, we packed up our shit and took off for the long ass drive back home. The next week at work our boss asked us what we did and we obligingly told him the truth, I think he almost pissed himself from laughing so hard. So lets review, our boss bailed on us, we acted like shameless assholes the entire weekend, but it was not a science conference so word never got back to the higher ups. Upon graduation I left that job for full time employment at my undergrad institution as a technician and instructor. Lump eventually left science to take a job as a golf pro and our old boss has moved on to bigger and better things while that company currently toils in some state of financial limbo. I've been to a bunch of conferences but that was the best ever.

Dude! I love this post! That does sound like the best conference ever!
Also, boo, I tried to hit 5 stars, but the mouse moved and ended up with 4 and I cant undo it.. lame!!

Evie, I would have deserved five stars if I got the girl. This post is kind of interesting as I'll be gone to another conference in a two months. However my behavior has considerably improved since those days.

We had to do something, I mean very few people came up to talk to us and most did an immediate about face when they found out we were a biotech company. So it was something to combat boredom.

@GR, well yea, I bet it's improved. Now a hotel TV would so not do.. it'll have to be a nice oversized HD plasma screen with surround sound.

@Overlord, cheap shot my friend.. cheap shot.. it was the mouse!!

Mouse Trap, Venture, Donkey Kong ... heck, even the Smurfs. Good times.

I had the Atari adapter too, which kicked ass! I recently bought a CV console off of Ebay, but the damn thing doesn't work. I need to find someone with good soldering skills to replace a couple of transistors or whatever you call those electrical doodads (such is obviously not my strong suit).

My first portable game was Nintendo's Game & Watch Parachute. A original version of that game is now worth a few bazillion dollars, and I can't find mine any more. Grrr...

Have you thought about getting PC emulations of these games to play?

Thomas Joseph

No. If it ain't the real thing, I don't want it. However, to be fair ... I did download DK on my Wii.

There's something about using the old CV joystick, as funky and clunky as it was ... that really conjures up some fond memories. Sitting at a PC (I do that all day) playing those games takes the ambiance out of them ... and at this point, with those graphics and ugly gameplay, the ambiance is all they have left to be honest.

I mean, you tried playing Zaxxon lately?!?!

I would have fired the person who chose and organized the show immediately.
That was a good $20,000 mistake.
It makes sense that the company has financial trouble with mistakes of that magnitude.

There has been allegations of insurance fraud after I left (which inside friends have confirmed) but this was just stupid. They could have let us cut and run after the first night and cut our losses. But we were staying in a hotel that was $500 a night for three rooms, plus our per diem was like $100 a day for each of us. I mean we racked up some expenses but nothing compared to the vendor fee that they paid.

And also consider the time spent not working in the lab and your boss' time spent not working. Including travel, the company lost four days of work from two people. $500 a night? I've never stayed at a $500 a night hotel, much less for work.
Were you at the Four Seasons?

I can totally up this. I had a pub-crawl in Sydney with Jackass. We were so drunk by the end of the night, he didn't remember dancing (think vertical epileptic seizure) and I had to be CARRIED to my hotel room. Bastard made me get up at 10 the next morning to get brekkie.
