After a frustrating year on the tenure-track job hunt, my eyes are still on the prize, and I've learned that sheer will might be the most important quality required for this career track.

NIH: Parental leave longer than 3 months is a "life choice," doesn't count as "real" maternal leave
Yay!!! My bribe worked, and there were just enough donors to get all my baby belly pics up on this post! Here now, the complete series of baby belly pics from my pregnancy with the Little Monkey, starting at 11 weeks and ending at 37 weeks, just two days before the Monkey made his debut:
11 weeks - anonymous donor, $50

14 weeks - anonymous donor, $25
16 weeks - Nikkilina, $25
20 and 23 weeks - anonymous donor, $50

26 weeks - courtesy of Genomic Repairman, $50
29 weeks - anonymous donor, $50
31 weeks - Becca, $75
34 weeks - Disgruntled Julie, $75
37 weeks - JadeEd in honor of JanedeLartigue, $33
Thanks so much to all the donors who gave to these projects to make education a better experience for so many young students in this country; y'all are an inspiration to me (and the Little Monkey) and deserve a huge pat on the back!!!!

Dude I used to play this game in the bar, the black wristband is missing in the lower picture. Crown me champion!
Just put up 16 weeks for you, Nikkilina!
Good job, GR. I'll keep an eye out for a suitable trophy. ;) Those were happy days - the loss of that sea-band signaled the quelling of my morning sickness.
Score! I can't wait to see what Tideliar thinks about all these since he's now obsessed with pregnancy.
Wow, look how much he grows in 2 weeks, that's incredible! Did those bands work for you? I use them on the plane and I can't decide whether they actually do much or not.
Jane - I definitely felt better with them on, but I can't say whether or not it was all in my head. I didn't take them off for weeks, though, and then gradually felt like I could live without them into my 13th week or so.
Cool, I'll have to remember that one, I handily have them available. I seem to have a pretty sensitive stomach so I imagine I am going to have terrible morning sickness or at least morning nausea, though whether the two are necessarily correlated I don't know. I bet it felt good to be through that phase. My cousin had sickness all the way through both of her pregnancies, this is why she shoots you devil eyes if you ask if they are having another!
Nikkilina-they are bands that you put around your wrist, they help to combat motion sickness on boats, planes etc. I use them for that purpose. They have a small button on the inside that you press against a particular point of your wrist. I guess the theory behind it is pressure points in the body, but it could just be a psychosomatic thing or that it distracts you. It leaves a nice little imprint on your wrist when you take it off though! I find that I do have to put it in the right place for it to work properly so maybe there is something behind it.
@Nikkilina - They're Sea Bands, originally designed for motion sickness, but also work well for morning sickness. There's a small ball that presses on the inside of the wrist, and that pressure point is supposed to soothe nausea.
What types of things made you sick? I could never pinpoint any one thing, but for me any strong odor would do it...then I wanted to barf!
Am I too late to donate money? If my donation causes the posting of a photo with a head jutting out between your legs I'm gonna faint. Not cool.
Sure Jade - I'll double it. I'm assuming I can credit you with that donation?
Not too late GR. And don't worry - if I won't show the bare belly, I'm pretty sure you don't need to worry about pictures that graphic. ;P If we get that far along with donations by the 9th, I'll have to figure out something else to post!
Alright, I was a softy for Jade because she asked nicely and I didn't really make it clear in the rules, but only one belly pic per donation from here on out. Otherwise I'll run out of pictures before the drive ends, and none of us want GR's concern to become an issue! :)
I have 2 more belly pics ready to post, and we'll be taking one last belly pic this weekend, when I'll be 37 weeks - and full term! I honestly wasn't expecting to get this many donations on my page this fast. I'm so happy about all the money the Monkey is raking in! ;)
I may have to issue IOU's for baby pictures if I run out of belly pics (but not ones of the Monkey "jutting out" as GR feared ;). I'll work on some ideas, just in case...
JadeEd - I went ahead and posted the donation. I figure they'll eventually switch it over to my page. Even if they don't, it funded one of my favorite projects, which I really appreciate. Besides, I needed a reason to post the week 37 belly pic!!! Thanks everyone for the donations!!!!!
If you scroll through this page really fast it almost looks animated! Congrats Dr. O! Any pics of the actual product yet? :)
I'll miss you! But I will definitely catch your other blog! . . .Read More
