Before I get the AHA grant, they definitely have been using that excuse (money is tight) to reject me. But now I have the AHA grant, which means they will have extra money once the fellowship starts, I am wondering what kind of excuse they'll be giving me!

I just got the American heart association postdoctoral fellowship, in which I'll be receiving my salary from AHA (not much, just 39K). I do think that I have been under-valued, and my institution indeed freeze our salary, so although I am a 2nd year postdoc, i only received 38K from my lab's grant. That's the motivation why I went to apply for AHA fellowship.
While I am reading this pos. . .

Mice, rats and other rodents are unwanted guests in many households. They will eat your food and chew holes in all kinds of items. They also carry several diseases that put you and your family's health in jeopardy. Rats are one of the most diseased rodents that will inhabit a house, and eliminating the problem needs to be done quickly.

The glue trap is covered by a layer of plastic that is peeled away to expose a long tray filled with a thick, glue-like substance. If the rat steps onto the glue trap, he will be trapped as effectively as if he had stepped in quicksand and there is no hope for escape. The rat and the glue trap can be disposed of together in the trash tied into a plastic bag so that no other wildlife can g. . .

I've got to agree.
Networking is anything but wasting time. I feel that I've been a solid scientist through PhD and Postdoc, but that alone wasn't enough. That "little bit" that put me over the top, at every level, was the networking and being in people's minds when they're making a selection for a position.
A very, very, very close second would be "passion." And you better be d. . .

Papers are most critical item, but getting your ass out there and pressing the flesh with other scientists is going to be a tremendous help as well.

But you can't argue that papers are not going to have a much bigger impact on your future career than anything else.
Namnezia, I'm certainly not arguing that. I am arguing, though, that in most cases, papers alone are not enough. Those who imply otherwise have either forgotten or (more likely) aren't all that concerned with the future (i.e. after leaving the. . .

Starting my blog--which I did on a complete whim and with no awareness of the "science blogosphere"--may be one of the best things I could have done for my career. The advice, support, and general collective wisdom of the online community has made a huge difference in how I approached the TT quest this year, and it appears to be paying off! Like Namnezia says, you have to manage your time, but . . .

I agree - blogging is a time sink and if its taking away time from one's productivity in the lab, then it's not a good thing. I agree that personal interactions, blogging, etc. allow you to make connections and formulate ideas, much like sitting around just thinking about things. But you can't argue that papers are not going to have a much bigger impact on your future career than anything else.. . .
