Stephen Hawking's Universe series had a whole show about aliens where he talked about why we shouldn't contact them. I have to agree. Aliens aren't going to travel light years to just shake our hand and leave. Put ourselves in that position, how many times have we gone somewhere to return with nothing in hand. We'd totally get annihilated.

I reckon there is scads of life out there. Hopefully in our solar system we have nothing but pond scum and basic multi-cell life we can conquer without trying too hard or doing an Andromeda Strain by mistake. I hope anything as or more evolved than us too far away to care...
