Autonomous robot maps ship hulls for mines For years, the U.S. Navy has employed human divers, equipped with sonar cameras, to search for underwater mines attached to ship hulls. The Navy has also trained dolphins and sea lions to search for bombs on and around vessels. While animals can cover a large area in a short amount of time, they are costly to train and care for, and don't always perform as expected.

Cheating robot beats you at rock-paper-scissors every single time People who claim they're good at rock-paper-scissors are usually just trying to psyche you out. But this robot, created by the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory in Japan, doesn't need to psyche you out, because it already knows it will beat you every single time.

Robotic fingertips are more sensitive than a human's Two researchers from USC published a study Monday describing a new kind of robotic sensor, modeled on the human finger, that can feel, explore and identify more than a hundred common materials. In fact, in some ways it's better at touching than we are.

Finding ET may require giant robotic leap Autonomous, self-replicating robots -- exobots -- are the way to explore the universe, find and identify extraterrestrial life and perhaps clean up space debris in the process, according to a Penn State engineer, who notes that the search for extraterrestrial intelligence -- SETI -- is in its 50th year.
"The basic premise is that human space exploration must be highly efficient, cost effectiv
