It's a Micro World after all is a blog dedicated to discussing pretty much whatever I feel like. When I delve into scientific matters it will primarily be discussing microbiology (agricultural, bioenergy, and environmental focus). Otherwise, I'll probably ramble on about sports and life.
My posts are presented as opinion and commentary and do not represent the views of LabSpaces Productions, LLC, my employer, or my educational institution.

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. I'm sure quite a few people took an extended break, recharged the batteries, and are now ready to launch themselves back into the daily grind. I did something of the sort myself, though I started early when my car broke down the day before my vacation officially started ($50 dollar repair for a blown fuse ... who knew the fuel pump had a fuse devoted to its operation? Not me!).
I intentionally stayed out of pocket, in part because I've done so much writing and reviewing (three papers revised/accepted, and four manuscripts reviewed in the last month) that I just couldn't face doing more writing on my down time. So when the time came to amscray, I packed up the car and headed out to the family for the Christmas holiday. Lots of food (though I actually didn't gain any weight), lots of laughter, and lots of rest. Very little drama (which is a nice thing), but lots of time in a car (over 2500 miles by the time I turned in the rental).
So here we are now in 2011, and I have made a couple of resolutions, which I haven't done in a long time.
1. Lose 10 to 15 more pounds. I dropped 10 pounds this past year ... little less than half of what I gained in the past couple of years. It's all been diet (low carbs, which is hard for this Italian) but I'm hoping I can start with the P90X again.
2. Paperless office. I've fired up EndNote X3, and I'm intent on getting X4. Combined with Adobe Acrobat Pro there is very little I need to print out when it comes to scientific reading. I'm hoping that I can keep my printing costs to a minimum this year, and will be keeping track of it. So far I've made it to January 3rd and I have yet to print anything off. ;)
So, I suppose this will serve as my first post of the new year. Has anyone else made any resolutions for this year?

I'm right there with you with those two resolutions. How did the other thing go that we were discussing?
I don't think I could ever go paperless. I like reading articles on paper too much. Plus it gets me away from the computer where there are plenty of other distractions.
The plan for this year is to knock out a high impact paper or two.
Brian, I too like reading articles on paper ... but I'm thinking I may get a tablet/kindle this year which may alleviate the need to have the physical article in my hand.
GR, if it's what I think you're referring to (I've slept since then) ... she said "Yes." Before I could actually get the words out of my mouth actually. :)
PK, from everything I've heard, yes, it does work. I'll hopefully be able to let you know in 3 months how it goes.
P90X is the only "fad" diet I've seen that does work. It's not really a fad diet though. It's a case of DVDs with workout routines. The problem is that a lot of people don't stick to it. I've heard it's great for cardio and toning.
Well, sticking to it is the key. Even I need to shed few pounds. My motivation for this is not as consistent as it is for my research.
PK, I hear ya. When in grad school I used to down a 2L of Coke every day, and I didn't exercise like I could have ... another round of transformations was always more important. That's a lot of empty calories and is what probably set the stage for my weight gain. For the past couple of years I've been a regular at the gym playing raquetball, and it's held my weight in check, but I haven't really dropped any. I changed my diet up and lost enough weight to get my BMI back in the "normal" range, but I really need to get down a bit further. I'm a long ways away from the days when my body fat was 6% and I was running 30 minute 10k's ... heck I may never get back THERE, but I'm going to try. I think P90X (which is a combination of diet and intense exercise) will do the trick.
Sweet, looking forward to those posts. I feel like I should be doing the same thing, but I keep finding myself hitting the "print" button. . . .Read More
I'd be hopeful to see a bigger, general push towards organic farming. But, the realities of scale and market urinate incessantly upon that hope. For a large supplier that ships out millions of eggs. . .Read More
I understand your point about critical thinking and I also believe that it is not stressed enough in higher education. However, I have had students (first year graduate) who lacked the building . . .Read More
Great post lots to think over. I agree critical thinking is not encouraged. I have had straight A college students in my lab/class that when asked to apply the knowledge they learned in lecture to . . .Read More
I didn't have the numbers, so I looked some up. I was thinking in terms of *number of institutions* not *number of students*. I think the principle would hold for number of students, but quite poss. . .Read More
