With the completion of the September contest, I would like to up the ante a bit. Over the last few weeks I've been talking with the bloggers about ways we can increase readership and inspire greater interaction on the blog posts. We decided that it might be fun to try a high stakes contest. This month's contest will be for a basic Apple iPad! The bloggers have very generously donated over $300 to fund this contest and BioData the creators of BioKM are sponsoring us for the rest!. This is also my birthday month, so I thought it might be nice to do something extra special!
This contest will work similarly to the last one in which the user with the most points at the end of the month will win the grand prize. The two runners up will get the standard novelty junk package! So it's a win-win for everyone.
How Do I Earn Points
Earning points on the site is easy. First of all, you must be a registered member of the site. You get 5 points for every comment you make on a blog post, news article, or forum/group post. You can earn points from other users if they vote up your comments. Additionally, submitting external news links also earns you points (50) if I approve them for inclusion in the "Articles from the Web" section.
You mentioned a Pyramid Scheme, Tell me more
Finally, and here's the big twist for this event. You can earn points for inviting your friends to join the site! All you have to do is provide their e-mail address and we will send a friendly e-mail to them inviting them to join the site. If they make an account, you get 10 points. In addition, you earn whatever points they earn. You can see how this could quickly create a points frenzy depending on how many of your science buddies you recruit to the site!
If you don't want to give us your pal's e-mail addresses, you can just cut and paste them your referral link on facebook or in a personal e-mail. You can find your referral link on your "Home" page underneath the "Invite your friends" header.
Where's the leaderboard??
Don't panic! It's right here!
Rules
Comment spamming will not be tolerated. Your comments will be deleted. And you will be penalized 20 points.
Creating Ghost friend accounts to earn points will also not be tolerated, you will be banned from the contest for doing this, please play fair. Your friends must be active on the website for you to earn points from them. You will only begin to earn points via your friends once they themselves have earned 25 points.
I reserve the right to recalculate the points totals as I see fit to account for spammy comments, ghost accounts, etc.
The winner will be the user who earns the most points in OCTOBER. Points earned in previous months will not count toward your total.
You must live in a country the Apple store will ship to to participate in the contest (US, UK, Austrailia, Canada, etc).
I reserve the right to change the rules at any time.
Is this a contest for a REAL iPad
This is a contest for a $500 gift card to the Apple store. This means you can spend the money on whatever you would like. A basic iPad costs $499, so if you want the iPad, go for it :)
Please take some time to stop by the novelty junk sponsors

"I reserve the right to change the rules at any time."
nice, the executive, oops I kinda spent the certificate already, here's a t-shirt clause!
that is my kind of contest!
Careful though. You probably weren't aware of what happened when SB unleashed me during the 1x10^6 comment obsession. Don't you want me to get any science done?

What you do on your non-LabSpaces time is your own business ;)
I'm pretty sure they ship to Canada! Those were just examples of places I know they ship to :)
I'll give every comment in the Biotech Discussion Forum a "thumbs up" in the month of October to boost your points and chances of winning. :-)
Come earn points over here!!
Cool, I think this will be a nice incentive for me to participate more since I've primarily been a lurker.
Not sure if I like the one with the most points gets the iPad. Would prefer to seem a random drawing with each point = an entry in drawing. So I guess I better set up my own contest then, huh.
John F does have a point there. People arriving mid-month will be at a serious disadvantage. Maybe something to consider the next time we give away an iPad? ;)
@John, that is a good idea. Where were you 6 days ago when I started this :P Maybe we'll do that for the next contest! I don't think anyone is going to run away with this though. There's 3 more weeks left, it's still anyone's game.
Nikkilina, Prabodh Kandala, Jason Goldman, JanedeLartigue, and Dr. Zeek will also tell you that I'm pretty stingy with the news link approvals, which is the fastest way to earn points here (mainly because I don't have time to go find these links myself AND manage the rest of the site AND have a real job) :P
I do like the drawing based on points idea. It definitely levels the playing field.
Brian, do the rest of us LS bloggers have the ability to go and approve links? That could release some of the burden on maintaining the site for you. There are enough of us to sort through the queue, no?
No, only I have the approval power. I asked a bunch of the bloggers to help me try to find links, and no one did :P So I've resorted to this. When I have really slow days I'll go look for links, but those don't happen very often anymore.

Haha-- I didn't think you were being stingy :-) Honestly, while the ipad idea is awesome, I would have eventually logged in and starting posting. You guys are a friendly bunch. The ipad was just the catalyst in getting me over the activation energy needed to finally join (haha, bad science joke, do I get point for that?? hee-hee)
When I worked at the biotech company during my brief industry interlude, there was a guy there who was like technology kryptonite. I mean he destroyed every damn computer workstation in the lab when I was there. At one point he was trying to upload some stuff to a network drive and I guess his internet connection was slow so he walked towards my bench to try to unplug my connection. I watched this from across the room and his solution was not to unplug my computer to plug his in and use my connection but rather just to unplug mine because he thought it would make his connection run faster. This was one of the litany of technology-tardisms that he committed.
@GR:Didn't he know that by unplugging your computer all the intertubez would start leaking out the cable?
Glad I didn't melt the server (although maybe it was part of my evil plan to win the iPad...)
I like the stinginess, it keeps me guessing! Definitely a good idea for a competition, as someone else said on here, up until now I have primarily been a lurker and this has definitely helped to hone my comment making skills! Though I may get fired for spending too much time on this damn website, oh well perhaps I'll have a shiny new iPad to play with whilst I look for a new job?!
P.S I'm glad we don't lose points for sending you articles you don't use, I'd be in the minus points by now I'm sure!!
Aaah, I keep seeing the 'all time' scores when I first log in in the morning, and wondering how everyone managed to get so many points overnight!
They cheat. You have to watch out for that Jason Goldman guy... Those behavioral psychologist types are totally manipulative :P
Question - do we get 10 points just for having friends sign up or do they need to reach 25 points themselves before we get those initial 10 points?
John's idea is worth considering. However, its up to Brian whether to include it in this contest or next one.
After reading several blogs here about donations to help school kids. How about donating our gift certificate money to them, in addition to our personal donations. Rather than a single winner, it will look as a collective effort from LS. I am envisaging smiles on kids faces.

I guess I missed Prabodh's earlier comment. I guess whoever wins can do whatever they want with the money. I'd be glad to donate it in your name to one of the DonorsChoose projects if that's your decision. The iPad thing isn't set in stone. I haven't bought the gift card yet ;) And it reminds me, I still need to mail out last month's prizes...
Your friends need to get 25 points before you get credit
Wait, but it does say you get 10 points if they make an account.
Also, a friend of mine has joined up through the link I sent him and has racked up a fair few points, but I don't seem to have received any of those points. Am I doing something wrong or does it just take a while to register while you check it out?
Intense competition now, gotta make sure I get all my points!
I'll tally up your referral points once I can review the account and be sure you're not ghosting with it ;) You only get those 10 points if they are real new people. That's the whole point of the "they must get 25 points before you can cash in." This prevents people from making random accounts at the end to just rack up 10 points :P
In light of the fact that we are approaching halloween maybe a few ghosts on the website would give it that festive feeling! :)
I'm really not digging the whole extra person helping earn points. It's killing my soul a little bit.
Lol, well...It was a part of the contest to begin with AND the spirit of the contest was to help bring new readers in, not to have the three of you spam as many news/blog comments as possible. Recruit more voices and you'll dominate the field ;) That's how Pyramid schemes work!
Actually I missed that part when I first read the rules, so I was really lost when Janede started asking questions. I went back and realized it was there. Oh well.
There's still time, recruit some friends and let's keep up the exciting competition, you've made it pretty tough to keep up with as it is! I'm bribing them with baked goods, but actually I think Will may now be addicted to reading the news stories!
Just FYI, my name is actually Jane. Stupidly confusing screen name I know. My surname is french (de Lartigue), and I get in trouble with hubby if I don't do it the proper french way and write the de lower case, I didn't even think how stupid it would look all written together as one name though! Doh! Still, I quite like Janede, perhaps I'll suggest that name to my brother for my new niece that's on the way! ; )
Spam!?!??? This is not SPAM! Each of my comments are carefully crafted and completely thought out. If I win it shall be with HONOR and with DIGNITY.
Spam indeed.

Whatever Janede, don't try to fake us out.

LMFAO
I think that Jason is whining too much. You should probably dock him points for questioning the Overlord! I'll be happy to accept his points.
Tideliar's comment is 5 letters long and *my* comments are spam? :-)
Mew mew mew my whimpering child. I'm 'staff' so I'm not in the running to play. Instead I get to troll you all >:)
No, Nikki, it's ok to make fun of her for having a French name. No one likes the French anyway.
It must have been tough growing up in the UK with such a French name. Were the British boys with bad teeth mean to you?
<troll troll troll>

Dude gets my mod point. I like being annoying and support others who do as well. And listen we here at LabSpaces don't care if you are American, Canyadian, Ethiopian, or a French SurrenderMonkey. We love everyone all the same, except for Will. That kid is just an asshole.
J/K.
I fart in your general direction. You're father was a hamster and you're mother smelled of elderberries! Now go away before I taunt you a second time.
Look, I'm very sensitive about my French name OK, especially being a Brit originally, I'm a traitor to my own kind! I think I should get extra points for tolerating all these xenophobic comments with such humility!
And GR, Will is French so he's covered by your labspaces love too! But it might explain why you think he's an asshole.
Nikki - I have one word...cheese! And about the name, not your bad, you aren't the only one to have thought that was my name, I'm thinking about having it changed by deed pole actually, just thought it was overdue clarification!
Janede I called Will out for fun just because his name was on the screen. So really the kid isn't an asshole, just impotent. That's the word on the street, that's all I'm saying.
Ha, ha! Clearly those on 'the street' are just worried about being shown up by the Frenchman's renowned prowess in the bedroom!

Oh so many dirty jokes ... so little time!
Whoa. Quite a can of worms I opened, huh? Actually, I think it was teh Overlord who opened up this can of worms.

Ha, ha! Clearly those on 'the street' are just worried about being shown up by the Frenchman's renowned prowess in the bedroom!
Oh...really?
Of course, we need to bear in mind two things from this study:
1) It's published in the (cough) Daily Mail
2) It's a subjective poll.
It's entirely possible that French women are just completely impossible to satisfy and have higher standards, it doesn't actually compare frenchmen to other men in the world in terms of their actual love making abilities. It would be interesting to see how french women rated men of other nationalities.
I married a frenchie and I'm perfectly satisfied!
Well since I have to be in Paris and then Bordeaux next month...I guess I could help collect some data.
