I am scientist by training, inclination and temperament. However, this is a blog, not a lab. The title reflects my passion for hyperbole, so don't take me too seriously. I don't. I was a technician in a physiology lab, got my PhD in molecular genetics and neuroscience, was a postdoctoral fellow in biophysics and now am a Project Manager in a Clinical Science/Biomedical Informatics institute. I am a scientific jack-of-all-trades, and very happy because of it. I write about science that catches my eye, making the transition away from the lab bench, and the slightly odd and moist boundary where science culture meets the public. I am an Englishman by birth, an American by temperament and if I were you I wouldn't lend me money.
My posts are presented as opinion and commentary and do not represent the views of LabSpaces Productions, LLC, my employer, or my educational institution.

Oh yes, this is happening. In just two weeks time, your b'loved (albeit less b'loved than me) Dr. Becca and I will be hosting a wee get-together during the Annual Society for Neuroscience Meeting in San Diego. It's a chance for us to meet all of you lovely people, and for you to meet each other, as well! We will drink, we will be merry, and we will most certainly banter.
According to its website, Quality Social is a bar. With food. It's also conveniently located near the Convention Center and has a solid bourbon selection, the importance of which I trust at this point needs no explanation.
While not required, your RSVP is much appreciated. We have started a twitter list of attendees, so if you'd like to be on it and see who your future BFFs are, hop on The Twitter and produce a tweet--any tweet--that contains our special hashtag: #sfn10banter. If you're not yet on the twitter train, this is the perfect opportunity! Not only will you be able to keep abreast of any B.A.N.T.E.R. developments, but there's going to be tons of tweeting happening throughout the meeting, and it will be a great way for you to stay in touch with--let's face it--all the cool people.
Even if you're staunchly anti-twitter, we'd love to see you! Leave a note in the comments here or shoot an email to dr.becca.phd [at] gmail instead, if you'd like.
Best Tweet-up Ever!!!!!!!

They have Bakers, Bookers and Woodford Reserve. Bourbon list has my approval. Alas, I will not be at SfN (nor will my nipple shirt), so I trust you to have a drink or two for me. Or three.
So jealous! I really wish I could be there!!
@Odyssey: Becca picked the bar so a good cellar was guaranteed from the get go!
@Nikkilina: I'll raise a glass or two in your honor! :)
Quality Social! I used to make their charcuterie. Good stuff. Too bad I can't be there.
WTF JCW? Get your gourmet butt on a commuter jet and come hang out with us!
Yep, I'm equally jealous! It's so damn close as well, but no conferences for me this year : ( At least we have some of your blogs to follow!
I seriously would have drove down, if need be, if it weren't for my commitments as a "babydoc" (as Tideliar refers to us).
I expect you both to have a beverage on my behalf. Have a super time!
I really should remember to subcribe to my own fucking comment feed huh...
JaYSeeDub, get your arse in a fucking car and get to SD for a beer. School can wait for a couple of days. It's only a PhD...
In honor of this event I can going to wear a nipple shirt.
But but but...they're gonna let me see real patients! My Ex-PI even got me a cane just for this.
...wouldn't the nipple shirt be more San Francisco (Castro) than San Diego?
When I'm not sulking and/or pouting about not getting to meet up with everyone, I'll be following your tweets!
@JCW: House is your ex-PI? Cool! And yeah, I thinking about the Castro look. Not just a nipple shirt, but, like, a shirt that that stategery cut holes... show off the ink and rings etc.
@MXX: Next time bug lady?
Thanks for organizing this. I will try to be there. However, Tuesday would be more "makable". Sunday and Monday are core times for officially scheduled socials. Also, there is the Salk open house at 6.30 on Monday. Any chance to either shift it to Tuesday or do it earlier on Monday, say 5 pm?
Dude, this is going to be so much better than any official social--by like, an order of magnitude. Have you been to those socials? Yawn.
Unfortunately, I already arranged things with the bar, plus it's all over the interwebz at this point, so the date and time are fixed. We picked Monday because we figured the most people will actually be in town. But Tideliar and I plan on being there for at least a few hours, so we hope you'll be able to swing by at some point!
Yeah, Pascal, have you ever been to an SfN social. They fucking suck (except for the Emory & MIT parties. And Wyeth is fun if you can gatecrash it)
Fukkene social = stand around and watch junior PIs fawning over senior doodez, while postdocs get increasingly aggressive and drunk trying to network for the one fucking faculty position open in the Tri-State area. If you get there early, send me a tweet. If you get therelate, I will probably still be there. The tall, handsome Englishman looking winsome with his Mai-tai
OK yes, the Emory and MIT parties are super fun, but I don't really consider those "SfN socials."
I figure Tideliar and I will try to get to BANTER a little early so that we can be there to greet everyone like the classy hosts we are. I'll be the other tall, winsome one.
Have I ever been to a social? Come on guys, give me some credit.
You *should* check out the vision social. It is usually full of win, as they say on the interwebs.
Also, the Salk open house is definitely worth a visit. I "learn" something every time.
But I'll try. I like the idea of being there for a while. The longer you guys stay, the more likely I will be able to make it. And I really want to.
Dang. I miss this. I only attend AACR.
You can hang with us virtually Prabodh :)
You on twitter? Follow the stream of ridiculous tweets I'll be spewing after my second MFJ :)
