I'm not sure I understand why this enzyme has such a short half life though?  I can understand not wanting to waste energy by having it on all the time, but since it is such a crucial factor in drug metabolism why would it not stay activated for longer...

It's not that the enzyme has a short half-life. It's that the active intermediate is short-lived. The intermediate can be quickly regenerated, but keeping a short half-life prevents it from generating reactive oxygen species that can cause protein, RNA, or DNA damage.
