paleontology, vertebrate paleontology, Triassic, archosaurs, stratigraphy
Projects:
I am a vertebrate paleontologist and geologist whose research focuses on the Triassic Period, the time when the first dinosaurs were appearing, and sharing thier world with a wide variety of other tetrapods. The Triassic is a critical phase in the history of life. The dinosaurs were intially minor players in terrestrial ecosystems, but eventually came to dominate the Earth, while other tetrapod groups went extinct or were marginalized. I use stratigraphy (the study of the vertical succession of sedimentary rocks and fossils) in order to try to understand faunal changes during the Late Triassic, and thier relationship to environmental change. I also study pseudosuchian archosaurs, the group of reptiles which were the dominant land animals for most of the Triassic, and which included the ancestors of crocodylians.
Interests:
Vertebrate paleontology, evolution, astronomy, paleoanthropology, the relationship between science and religion.
Heroes:
Charles Darwin, Thomas Huxley (except for his racism), Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins; in general, voices for rationality and human progress against superstition and complacency.
Non-Scientific Interests:
Books, movies, art, travelling, women.
