The god side of things comes from the last line of a 'A brief history...' when he says '...and then we shall know the mind of god'.

I believe he was brought up Christian, as his father had some involvement or something, and is reasonably well versed in the bible.

This is what I recall from a half-remembered interview I once read. Sorry that I can't be of more information. [Ariel] Why not send an email to the man himself? He might just answer....

Yeah, I agree with Rift, I remember something similar. He didn't dismiss the idea that God had a role in creating the Universe in A Brief History of Time, but in his new book he is apparently more explicit about his religious views. The book came out recently and there were lots of interviews with him and news articles as a result, if she does a google search and digs around a bit, they're should be plenty of stuff in recent news articles.
