Over on ScienceBlogs, a commenter in an Isis thread made a comment about the site being hard to navigate. When I first got here, I had a similar problem. I'm going to post my thoughts, and mean them only in terms of constructive criticism.

To some extent, I think the two menu's directly underneath the LabSpaces logo should be switched. Actually, I personally would like to see a single menu that, when you mouse over select elements, brings a drop down menu if appropriate. For example if you have the menu go as follows:

Home Blogs Forum Groups News Protocols Publications Account Logout

Then News could bring a drop down menu to "Featured > Health > Bioscience > Physical Science > Environment ... etc"
And Account could bring down a menu with "Edit Profile > View Profile > Friends > Labs ... etc"

I think the menu across from the search, at the very top of the site is fine, but it's also the only way to get to the Forum (can't get to it from the two main menu's).

That's just my thoughts remembering when I first came to this site.

I agree I think it might simplify it out and make it easier to navigate.

Dropdown menus don't render well at all on mobile phones (and I run this site from my phone 50% of the time!). Not that it matters, but I'm also pretty sure that person was an Isis sock puppet. Only ever posts on Isis' blog and didn't stop by or e-mail me his/her suggestions when I reached out.

Anyway, if you can think of a better navigation layout that doesn't require dropdowns, I'll try to figure out how to implement it.
