So um, i've been wondering, whether i should take up Plant Biotechnology as a subject to specialize in. Coz i might not get the chance to specialze in Chem, however much i'd love to! I'm in my second year. Next couple of years i get to specialize, if i get chosen. Or i can do the general degree which is only 3 years in total.
What worries me is the job opportunities for a just a B.S(Special) Plant Biotechnology graduate. Are there any professional qualifications i could do like CIM or CIMA that'd help me in getting a job? Coz the Ph.D is gonna take long. (I get exempted from an M.S if i specialize! ) Don't think i can wait that long before starting work, it's a little impractical for me. Plus i have to go overseas to do a Ph.D. My country doesn't offer them :(
Where do you plan on working in the end? Biotech Agriculture degrees are pretty well sought after, but I think you'd benefit tremendously from a PhD, otherwise you'll rot in tech slavery doing bench work for the rest of your life. Unless that's something you'd be interested in!?
Hi Brian!
Thanks so much for taking time to leave a reply.:)
I'd love to do a Ph.D. but my country(SriLanka) doens't offer Ph.Ds; in science at least. I'd have to fly overseas and to my Ph.D work, which i might not be in a position to do right after my degree. But i am planing to do one at the earliest possible.
I certainly do not want to do bench work for the rest of my life! :D But sadly my career path is stilll unclear. There are so many things i need to take in to cosideration.Things are much different over here thatn in the US.
But after getting my B.S i most probably will join a firm, work a couple of years. Since i'd only have my B.S by then, i'm thinking of taking up a professional qualification now, so id have a better chance at a job. Do you know any such qualifications that'd help me?
I was infact thinking of becoming a certified associate in project management (CAPM), offered by PMI. Do you think taking up project management will help for the time being?(i.e until i fininsh my Ph. D work)
If you want to continue working in your country, then you'd probably know the options better than I do :) I think if you want to work for a bitoech company in the states or in Europe you should consider getting a PhD as soon as possible. There are a couple of certification programs recognized here in the US, but they're usually only needed for clinical work: GMP/GLP. You may think about getting those certs and running clinical trials in Sri Lanka or India. I have a graduate student now who plans to get those certs so he can go back to India and be a Pharmceutical clinical trial manager.
Thank you so much for the info Brian. Its very helpful and it's very kind of you :)
I will check in to those, and see what's best for me!
No problem! That's why I'm here :)
