What needs fixing? What's missing? What would you like to see here? Think outside the box and I'll try to make it happen!

it might be nice to be able to add multiple (custom?) labels to blog posts so that it is easy to find all the posts in a same group. I find these really useful when going through archives of folks on places like blogger.

not so out of the box, but I'm having a slow start to Monday :-)

So like a keywords box in addition to the post "category"? Define multiple categories for each post?

Or a section in the right column that displays similar posts? Or posts you've made in the same category.

I guess we haven't really talked about how we're going to deal with post history as they start to pile up.

Comments section

Talking with someone who has commented as a guest, here are a few things to consider:

- Is there anyway to adjust settings on the recaptcha spam guard so that only a single word has to be input? Or are there any alternative spam filters (like Akismet on WordPress.com or Bad Behavior used on Scientopia) that would be reasonably straightforward to implement?

- I think many people prefer having the comment field available on the main page (instead of having to click through)-a setup similar to Blogger. Of course instead of "Google Account", it would be "LabSpaces login" (with similar note about creating an account). And that could be followed by "Name/URL" (perhaps with note that anon commenting is allowed).

- I have no idea what would be involved with this one but I'm wondering if there might be any benefit to adding the option of using an OpenID login.

- The individual I spoke with has had issues with comments disappearing into the ether. This is not a problem unique to LS, as Blogger used to eat my comments often (why I switched to the Intense Debate commenting system when I was on Blogger), but it's still frustrating for commenters. And I have a feeling most are more likely to just not comment than to let someone know that there's a problem posting comments.

HTML scan?
Tue, Aug 24, 2010, 7:21 am CDT
Is there anyway to set up a check for open html tags on posts and comments before checking? I suspect this is one reason contributing to truncated comments. Plus I was having issues with a post this weekend due to an unclosed tag, which kept stripping out most (if not all) of my other tag enclosures when I would save the post on LS. If a post or comment could be scanned and flagged for open tags so they could be corrected before posting, I think it would save a lot of headache, frustration, and double posting.

post labels

I'm with Gerty-Z that it'd be great to be able to add customizable labels. Don't know exactly what she had in mind, but I think an additional field on the new/edit post page labeled "tags" that would allow us to input our own labels for posts like "mentorship", "research", "science suckitude"... We could then have an option to list tags in the sidebar (or maybe below comments section, since sidebars are getting kind of lengthy)-maybe even a tag cloud with size based on frequency of use?

Re: organization for archiving, at some point, it might be useful to add an archive element with posts organized by month.

People have issues with recaptcha? The whole point of recaptcha is that one of the words is "known" and the other is a word that an OCR program had trouble figuring out. Recaptcha helps turn old books into machine readable information. I'm not changing that, I love the concept :P

I'm still not sold on openID, yahoo, google, facebook connect logins. They really don't do anything to help bring new users to this website. That's why I like the guest comment system, it's just annoying enough that it may sway people to sign up for a real account. When you let people login with other gateways, they don't feel obligated to become a "member" of this site. It really goes back to my whole community issue.

Gerty-Z was having the same issue with unclosed tags. I'm sure that's been an issue for some commentors and it's probably always an issue with the <a> tag. I can definitely add some field validation code to be sure all of those tags are closed.

I'll add the custom labels and tags later today. That should be pretty easy to implement.

I'll work on the archiving list this weekend. That's going to take a little more effort.

That's fair, but I still think it's worth considering a change to how the comment input field is displayed. I think some people are a wee bit put off by the member/guest distinction. I understand the usage, but-from the blogs standpoint-there's a much wider community, and for me, it's important that they're engaged and feel welcome. I think having Labspaces login and name/url options below comments instead of member/guest designations might be a good compromise because it still promotes the LS community but doesn't create the connotation that anyone else is a guest in someone else's house. Am I making any sense at all?

I can agree with where BB is coming from. I find that any little obstacle can become a deterrent for me to post a comment. I like the community, but if there was more of a open feeling then we might encourage people that are frequent reader/commenters to join because they want to be part of the community and not because we twisted their arm.

Anyhoo, on a totally unrelated note: how do people feel about making it so that forum posts are in reverse-chronological order? I think it would be easier to see what is the most recent post at the front instead of having to click an extra button to get to the end. Is that just me?

OK, maybe those are related in the "I am lazy" category. :-P Thanks for the (forthcoming) categories!

Also fixed the problem of the disappearing posts. It was an issue of <img and <a tag closing. I finally got the problem to replicate :) So I fixed it!

Hey, Brian, you've been busy while I've been away from my computer! I, for one, like the format of comment input.

Learn to code n00b!

Ok, sorry. Actually I write in MarsEdit which lets you see open tags as you type (because, for example, you entire page stays in italics or as a hyperlink). It totally surprised me in the comments however when i tire dot do a little 'heart' sign and it killed my comment.
