Why all the focus on the "problem" of couples not getting married?  If they are cohabiting and still have their financial independence, it seems like a good compromise to allow both partners some freedom and flexibility by not bringing paperwork into the relationship.

I personally think the decline in marriage rates reflects changes in society more than anything else.  Men and women are able to lead (financially) independent lives from one another, which often wasn't the case 50 years ago.  So it seems reasonable to believe that these changes would lead to a higher divorce rate in married couples, and a lower marriage rate in younger, cohabiting couples.  Or to put it more simply, marriage is no longer the glue that holds society together, and for the most part, I think we're doing fine anyway.

I agree, Cynthia, but I don't think they're saying that the decline in the marriage rate is a problem.

I suppose.  Perhaps I'm just reacting to the plethora of articles I've been seeing lately on marriage in modern society.  To some it's seen as a problem, to others it's seen simply as a trend.
