So this is the Blogger forum. I thought it would be a good idea to get all of us on the same page and I can also inform you of changes and updates I have made to the back end. I've found a couple of errors with the help of Jade Ed! Saving blogs and changing the dates was problematic. If you had saved a blog to post at a later date and then tried to edit it, the script defaulted to the current date and time instead of remembering the date and time you had set. So if you editted and then saved, it would post automatically if you didn't reset the date to a time in the future. Lazy mistake on my part, but its fixed now ;) Also, the underline HTML tag wasn't set as allowed, so it was being deleted from all of Jade Ed's posts. I fixed that too.

BiochemBelle requested the ability to delete blog comments. Previously I was the only one that could do this. Now you can do it too if you're the blog owner. The only difference is that if you delete a post, the user doesn't lose 20 points, only I have that power, for now... I just don't want people abusing the points system since I'm still trying to work some of the bugs out of it!

For this weekend I plan on adding the long awaited picture album for you guys so you can host images here instead of looking for space on another page! I'm also going to revamp the picture posting options so they're not defaulting to right adjusted. Just to give you a few more options.

Finally, I'm going to streamline and logically name the CSS elements on the blog pages so that you can easily figure out and redesign your pages as you see fit :)

That is all, let me know what you think so far, and start New Threads if you find issues or have suggestions!

I agree. I know how much time and energy goes into making a site like this and it is a big job.

One feature that might be nice is if the bloggers could have links to some of their favorite blogs- like eblogger does- to tell other people what writers we like (outside of LabSpaces). One feature of eblogger I liked was that I could find updates to my favs, like @Lab-Mom and others immediately when I log in so I can catch up.

Jade, you can add links to whoever you want using the "Junk Box" section. You can stick whatever you want in there, links, videos, etc. Let me know if you need any help and I'll put a sample in there for you to go off of!

Now for the updates, are you saying you'd like a section where you can see an aggregated feed of all of your favorite bloggers? That might be tricky :) It's a lot of DOM and I hate DOM, but I'm willing to work on it :) What does everyone else think?

I think the better idea is that if you have favorite blogger friends that are independent, I can ask them if they'd like to join up here. Then finding those updates for you would make my life way easier :) Otherwise I'm going to need you to input the RSS feed link of all of your favorite bloggers and create a LabSpaces feedreader of sorts for you. I kind of need to do it anyway to help streamline the addition of external articles, but I still think we can squeeze in a few more bloggers here! SO keep an eye out for good people!

Pages?
Thu, Jul 22, 2010, 5:50 am CDT
I know nothing about coding, so I have no idea how complicated it is to do any given thing-that is to say, if it's ridiculously difficult, feel free to ignore :)
One feature on services like WordPress and Blogger that I like is "Pages"-basically static/undated pages for things like more background info on the blog or setting up a blogroll (mine outgrew the sidebar long ago). I think(?) one advantage is these pages don't post to RSS feed, so you're not filling your feed with pages-such as blogrolls-that might be updated frequently.

Thanks for all the time and effort you're putting into this, Brian!

@biochem - Ah, so you want to have more than one page for your profile? It's very easy to do this, you'll just have to code in the content for all of the pages, kind of like they are static pages, but there will be a link to them in your right hand side bar under your profile like "View my blog roll," etc. I should be able to get to that soon, but my first priority this weekend is the photo album.

Hi- I put the links to the blogs I like but when I use the code to make a line break, it's not working. How do I get it to leave a space between them?
Also- is there a way to code it so that when someone clicks the link, it opens it in a new window and doesn't take people away from the page they started with?

@Jade, You need to stop pointing out all of my dumb mistakes :P Haha, again, forgot to make the "br" tag allowed so I went through all of the blog input scripts and added every text formatting tag I could think of to the lists!

To make links jump to another page stick target="_blank" inside the opening "a" tag ie a href="" target="_blank"

html editor

In case there are any others such as myself who are not particularly fluent in html/xml markup, you might want to take a look at ScribeFire. It is a free extension that is now setup to run in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari 5.0. IMO, it's a decent blog/html editor tool. I don't think you can publish directly to your LabSpaces blog from Scribefire (or if you can, I have no idea where to start), but you can write the blog in scribefire and copy and paste the html code. Don't know if anyone has other recommendations for the tech meek :)

Hi B,
OK- thanks. Actually, it automatically puts in the Target-blank code when you use the link but I deleted it not knowing what it was.
One more thing. It doesn't save the password even though I check the box to save it. Is that a simple code change too?

Thanks for getting things fixed so fast.

A couple of noob questions about comments on LabSpaces blogs:

1) Is there any way I can set up notification (either email or RSS) for when a comment is added to one of my posts?

2) Is there any way to link back to a specific comment on a post?

@Jaded, save password? Where? You mean on the login page?

@Belle
1. I can definitely setup an RSS feed or e-mail notification for that. RSS is probably much less annoying than getting an inbox full of e-mails. I'll add it to-do my list for the week.

2. Linking to comments? I guess I don't understand, like a ping back/track back? Tell me more :)

3. Start a new thread for things like this :P
